Not really...I mean time doesn't seem to have been flying by for me, but it must be, because yet again it's been almost a month between posts.
An update in the continuing saga of finding a companion dog for our dog, Mystery. We met a few dogs, some she liked and we didn't, some she didn't like and we did, and the one we landed on (at least for right now) that she felt ambivalent about but my husband loved.
We're hoping things work out, because none of us want to go through the trauma of adopting a dog and then having to return it to the shelter... :(
We picked him up yesterday, and he's exactly the same mix as Mystery--Australian Cattle Dog mixed with Black Lab. His coat is wavy instead of straight like hers, and he doesn't have as much white, and his ears won't stand up. He has brown eyes, while Mystery's are golden, and he's a little smaller than she is, although he's 7.
Mystery has been wonderful about sharing her home with another dog...she's let him use her beds and we haven't really had any power struggles, though she did make it clear on the ride home from the shelter who was the queen dog. Jet seems pretty submissive (at least for right now), and we hope that continues. He LOVES his tennis ball (aka security blanket) and Mystery's not as in to them, so that's good! And we've been making sure that she gets to come in 1st, go out 1st, and eat 1st, and that we greet her 1st. We want Jet to see that we think she's the top dog, too, so there's (hopefully) no confusion about which dog is in charge.
I'll add some photos once we know we'll be able to keep him (like as long as they don't hurt each other and he doesn't have major separation anxiety and rip apart the house when we're not home)--so hopefully in a day or two.
Mystery's been a great little leader on their walks so far & Jet wants to be right by her side (though a little behind, of course, because she's the queen bee!) Maybe that should be her halloween costume--a bee :)
More on the dog situation as it develops, and if things go well, pics soon of the new guy!!
